I started teaching at Pistor MS in Fall 2017, Pistor is a predominantly Latino, Title I school in Tucson AZ. When I started, there was no choir program, and I had classes full of kids with no interest in singing. It was the hardest year of my life. By the holiday season I had wrangled a concert together, and in the Spring semester we had 2 very successful concerts. The following year we established a choir booster, and set a big goal, singing at Disneyland. That year we had four concerts , sang out of school at a choral festival, at the Music in the Parks Festival, at 8th grade graduation, and choir became a popular thing at Pistor! I applied for a grant and received an apple mini, which I used to create a small recording and rehearsal studio room in our practice room. Students were able to practice parts, compose on GarageBand, or work on the keyboard in there. We elected students to be choir officers, and to take over choir management as much as possible, leading warm-ups, and having meetings to discuss the direction of the choirs. The more the students were involved the more invested they were. My final year we were performing more out of school, and our booster was huge, involving 50 parents. We were invited to sing at the school board meeting, and performed well at the local choir festival. We had another Disney trip, and a lot of outside performances planned when Covid changed everything. It was a hard transition, but by using platforms like Flipgrid, and SmartMusic I was able to keep the students engaged during the last months, even getting our principal to sing in a Masked Singer contest.
