Flagstaff Sings! was a community choir based in Flagstaff AZ that I started in August 2016. I started this project because I've always liked to mix genres, and blending choir with instrumental music can make for a wonderful synthesis. I began the advertising for the choir in July, running targeting advertising through Facebook, posting flyers, and reaching out to the local press to get exposure. It was a great start, and we had 4 concerts our first year, the second being a refugee fundraiser , where we raised almost $1,000 for Shelterbox, a non-profit that provides immediate shelter for those in need. Our last concert, Crossing Borders, was a fundraiser for No Mas Muertes, based in Tucson. Flagstaff Sings! was more than just a choir, we brought in local presenters to share what they do in the community, and how it relates to music. We also featured local speakers/musicians/poets, at our concerts, to bring more inter-community awareness. Founding Flagstaff Sings! was a big task, that required first and foremost having the vision, and then the organizational and problem-solving skills to make it happen. This included: recruiting the musicians, finding rehearsal space, building the website and Facebook page, running advertising campaigns, designing promotional videos, arranging or writing most of the material we perform, designing programs, doing all PR, recruiting local presenters and guest artists to perform with us, convincing a venue to book us in advance for a choir that didn't exist yet, managing the finances, even building the very podium myself and my co-director Leon Lucero stood upon. I loved writing/arranging music for the group that challenges them, but doesn't overwhelm, and fits the theme of our current concert. The choir continued on under the great leadership of my friend Analia Romero. Click here to access rehearsal/performance videos.
